ESSQ graduate, George Tse reports on his RCSEd-funded research fellowship in the field of transplantation
For many doctors a career in academia is a prevailing ambition, however with the European economy in deep recession it has become increasingly difficult to obtain funding for medical research. Thankfully The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has a rich history in research and has played a pivotal role in contributing to Edinburgh’s international reputation both clinically and in research. Since the early 1990s the College has funded between eight and ten small research grants each year, as well as awarding year-long fellowships to allow full-time research. Furthermore the College hosts multiple symposia and meetings that allow presentation of research and creating stimulating forums for debate.

The RCSEd has supported a new skills workshop to help medical students improve their understanding of anatomy
The first-ever Highland Surgical Anatomy and Suturing Skills Workshop was held at the Centre for Health Science, Inverness, on 18 March. The fully-booked event had over 40 attendees, including students from Pakistan and Italy. Organised in partnership with Doctors Academy and sponsored by the RCSEd, the class was set up following high demand from graduates who were eager to acquire a deeper understanding of human anatomy that was relevant to clinical practice.
Highlights included focus group anatomy sessions where key structures were illustrated and marked on a volunteer, and attendees had the opportunity to practise identifying important anatomical structures.
