Green Tourism Business Scheme
We are all increasingly mindful of the impact we have on the environment and the need to act responsibly. Ten hill place hotel will play its part by participating in the Green Tourism Business Scheme (opens in a new browser window), an initiative driven by VisitScotland, Scotland's national tourism body.
We aim to achieve the highest standard possible, to ensure we fulfil all our green commitments, and have recently achieved a Gold Award.
Please view our hotel's green commitments (opens in a new browser window) ...and how you can help us achieve them.
How to reduce your carbon footprint
Ten hill place hotel is helping to address climate change by partnering with Mercy Corps to set up a micro-hydro facility in Colombia. The introduction of electricity will transform available health care in a remote community, improve standards of living and help lift people out of poverty. At the same time CO2 emissions will be reduced.
Minaflores is a remote community of indigenous families in the mountainous region of Colombia.
Cut off from the provision of healthcare facilities villagers are faced with a 4-5 hour walk to the nearest clinic or crossing a 10 kilometre mountain pass by horse.
The quality of health care can be transformed with the availability of electricity, allowing storage of basic medicines and vaccines with refrigeration.
In addition electric cooking facilities will reduce the high levels of respiratory disease associated with woodsmoke.

Q & A
What is it?
Ten hill place is enabling guests to become involved with carbon offsetting.
Ten hill place hotel
Ten hill place has a Gold Award from the Visit Scotland Green Tourism Business Scheme. As part of our corporate social responsibility programme we get involved with a number of social and environmental projects.
What is a Carbon Offset?
A ?carbon offset? is an emission reduction credit from another organisation?s carbon reduction project that balances on a unit by unit basis the carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases that are emitted to the atmosphere in the course of the emitting activity.
What is the measurement?
Carbon offsets are typically measured in tons of CO? equivalent. Organisations can pay to 'offset' their emissions on a tonne by tonne basis.
How do Offsets convert to actions?
For every one tonne of emission to be offset, money is paid to projects to reduce one tonne CO? and it is that money which helps make the project viable in the first place.
How can individuals get involved?
Ten hill place in conjunction with Mercy Corps? Sleeping Green initiative gives guests the option of offsetting their carbon footprint from their visit to Edinburgh, as well as supporting a climate friendly project in the developing world. We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £1 per night.
Where is my £1 going?
Your total donation is given by ten hill place to Mercy Corps to support a climate friendly project in Minaflores, Colombia which will reduce CO? emissions. The reduction in CO? is achieved through the setting up of a micro-hydro electricity facility at a cost of around £33,000.
What will be the reduction in carbon emissions from this project?
The carbon emission reduction associated with a 17 kWh micro-hydro facility is estimated to be 51 tonnes of CO? per annum, or 1020 tonnes of CO? over its anticipated 20 year lifespan.
