|RCSEd to open new centre of operations in Birmingham|
|Monday, 21 October 2013|
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has announced the opening, in spring 2014, of a new centre of operations, to be based in Birmingham.
This marks the first time in the College’s 500 year history that it has had a base outside Edinburgh. As such, it is a ground-breaking development for RCSEd and one which recognises that 80% of its UK membership is based in England and Wales - over 11,000 professionals in total.
Commenting on the announcement, RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie said: “Patient safety lies at the heart of everything we do as a College and it is the principle which guides our membership. We therefore feel strongly that we need to provide the best services and facilities possible to everyone who has chosen to be part of our College, wherever they are based. In recent years, we have been investing heavily in providing services to our membership across the UK by expanding our Regional Advisor networks, offering more UK exam locations and increasing regionally-held events, activities and courses. Our new centre will confirm this commitment by providing a focal point for our activity in England and Wales and cementing our position as a College with a strength and relevance throughout the UK.
“At the same time, we are pressing ahead with an addition to our Edinburgh-based conference facilities – so, overall, a significant expansion to our College activities for our growing membership which now numbers some 22,000 professionals in over 100 countries worldwide."
In the next few weeks RCSEd will be releasing details of the programme of activities which will be available once the centre opens in spring next year; it will follow this with information about events to be held during the opening week itself.
Mr Ritchie added: “Through these developments we aim to provide a choice for our membership, as to where and how they interact with our College and make use of its services and facilities. I hope that many of our Fellows, Members and Affiliates, as well as our colleagues in all areas of healthcare will be able to join us for the opening events and that they will feel at home in and make use of both our Birmingham base and Edinburgh headquarters for many years to come.”
