Nuss expert’s Edinburgh masterclass
24 November 2011

pilegaard copyThe Department of Thoracic Surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, supported by the RCSEd, has hosted a Masterclass on Nuss correction of pectus excavatum

This Masterclass, held on 27-28 September, utilised a more traditional approach than the didactic lecture room-based programme with edited video material. The format adopted was, therefore, to provide an immersive operating theatre experience for the attending surgeons. This was intended to provide a complete understanding of the procedure and of all the set-up and surgical manoeuvres which might not be evident from edited video material or formal presentations.

The College has launched an initiative to support dedicated surgeons who deliver training while meeting service targets

Are you passionate about training the surgeons of the future? Do you feel you get the necessary reward and recognition for your effort? The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is committed to supporting excellence in surgical training for its current and future members.

With this in mind, the College has established a Scottish pilot project of a Faculty of Surgical Trainers, the aim of which is to secure greater recognition for the central role of surgical training in the delivery of high quality patient care.

Your chance to be counted

The RCSEd has launched an online survey to identify the training and support needs of SAS doctors

Most surgical units in the NHS have at least one Staff and Associate Specialists (SAS) doctor as a member of staff. These doctors are recognised as permanent committed members of the team, providing much of the backbone of the service. With the planned changes in the workforce, the number of doctors in this grade is increasing. There are a wide range of reasons why doctors take up posts in the SAS grade and we must understand the developmental needs and the aspirations of individual doctors in order that they can achieve their full potential. This will be to the benefit of both the surgical units involved and to the NHS in general.

SAS survey

The RCSEd committee that represents SAS doctors is organising a short survey of all Fellows and Members of the College in order to identify all College surgeons in the SAS grade and establish further information about the demographics of those in the grade. This survey is being sent out by email, but in case any SAS doctor has not received the email, the survey can be completed by following this link: www.surveymonkey.com/s/2N62S6R

Preston’s consultants and students gather for regional forum
21 November 2011

preston-meeting2RCSEd’s senior team visited Preston in October for a meeting with local surgeons and undergraduates, reports Jeyaram Srinivasan

I was appointed as an RSA in 2007, one of the only two such posts in England at that time. The RSA network has expanded considerably since then – and a programme of regional meetings around the UK has highlighted the value of the College reaching out to its Fellows and Members. Therefore, it was a great personal satisfaction to host the regional meeting in my home unit at Preston on 6 October.
