Fellow pledges memoir profits to charity

snmemoir_coverOne of RCSEd’s Fellows has published his memoirs, after a career spanning almost 50 years.

Mr Phillip Harris was Consultant Neurosurgeon and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Edinburgh and was mentored by the renowned Professor Norman Dott. To Be A Neurosurgeon covers the author’s early years in the RAMC and goes on to chart a period of rapid technical advances in neurosurgery. All profits from the sale of the book will be donated towards research into epilepsy and spinal disorders.

RCSEd awards Ann Gloag for ‘outstanding’ humanitarian work

snanngloag_rcscompanionnewsOne of Scotland’s leading business figures, Ann Gloag OBE visited the RCSEd on 16 March to receive the Companionship of the College.Ann Gloag co-founded Stagecoach in 1980 and, along with her brother Brian Souter, grew the company into one of the UK’s largest transport groups. But it is her extensive humanitarian work in Africa that has brought Ann Gloag recognition from the College.

Mr David Tolley, President of the RCSEd, said: “This award has been made in recognition of Ms Gloag’s past support and encouragement for women surgeons through the RCSEd’s Gloag Scholarships but primarily for her significant and lasting contribution to the relief of suffering in Africa.

“In particular, Ms Gloag’s Freedom from Fistula Foundation, which provides vital healthcare for child-bearing women in Africa and offers treatment for the chronic problem of obstetric fistula following childbirth, resonates with the RCSEd’s own fundraising activities and charitable work in the continent.”

 
RCSEd hosts Sabah meeting
28 August 2012

The RCSEd is to hold this year’s Borneo Scientific Meeting. Titled ‘Borneo Surgical Delights’, the meeting will take place at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Medical School on 3 November 2012.

Meeting coordinator, Professor Datuk Muthusamy commented: “We hope that this will be the vanguard for many future joint activities with The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. We shall strive to make this meeting useful for not only the surgeons practising in Sabah, but to all who are involved in improving the surgical care for those in Sabah and the regions around.”

RCSEd President, Mr David Tolley said: “The RCSEd is committed to helping the surgical fraternity in various parts of South East Asia by utilising our overseas Fellows to develop the science and craft of surgery through encouraging collaboration between fellows of all colleges in the pursuit of surgical excellence.”

 
Trauma care: Getting the right fit for Scotland

traumareport_coverThe College has published a report calling for improvements to the configuration of major trauma services north of the border

The surgical management of trauma is one of the earliest skills that a surgeon learns. Worldwide, the mortality from trauma, either civilian or military, is a major cause of death and disability. Scotland, with a population of approximately 5,000,000 people spread over a wide territorial area, faces challenges in the delivery of trauma care for all of its population.
