The College launched its new brand in June, unveiling a fresh corporate identity along with a redesigned online presence. The new identity is based on the ‘Hinc Sanitas’ sculpture which stands in the College grounds.

Speaking at the brand launch, Director of Membership and Communications Sarah Allen said:

“As a College, we embrace a culture of innovation and wish to reflect this in our College identity. Our new logo is the physical representation of this desire and of our core beliefs and values. Our President’s vision was that the College’s identity should represent the heart and ethos of the College - dedication, hard work, training, education, skill, support and patient safety, all of which come together when our members commence operations.”

Journal’s impact factor reaches new heights
27 August 2012
surge_cover_sample2In June, The Surgeon announced that its Impact Factor (IF) had reached 1.406 – its highest level yet with a substantial increase in last year’s IF of 1.136.

The RCSEd’s academic journal, which is published jointly with RCSI, now ranks 97th in the Surgery category of Thomson Reuters’ IF index (up from 102nd last year).

The journal’s Editor-in-Chief Professor Austin Leahy, commented: “Impact factors are just one measure of a journal’s success, however they are a very important one. The highest ever impact factor for The Surgeon confirms that it is going from strength to strength. It is also an acknowledgement of the hard work that has contributed to The Surgeon’s success by the Editorial Board, the International Advisory Board, and especially by the team in Elsevier. We will continue to welcome original papers and review articles.”

27 August 2012

dentalawardA long-serving Member of the RCSEd’s Dental Council has received a Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to dentistry.

Professor Bill Saunders, who was Dean of Dundee University’s Dental School for over 10 years and has served three terms on RCSEd’s Dental Council, was presented with the accolade at the inaugural Scottish Dental Show in May.

Dean of the Dental Faculty, Professor Richard Ibbetson commented: “Professor Saunders is a highly-respected dental academic with an international reputation in Endodontics. Among his many professional achievements, Bill was Chair of the UK Dental Schools Council and chaired the RCSEd’s Specialist Advisory Board in Restorative Dentistry for six years. We are extremely pleased that Bill has been recognised – many congratulations.”

Otolaryngology Surgical Specialty Group seeks new members
27 August 2012

The College’s Surgical Specialty Group in Otolaryngology Surgery (SSG in ENT) is recruiting new members to take office in November 2012.

If you are a pro-active, clinically and politically aware RCSEd ENT Fellow then this is an excellent opportunity to serve your College and your specialty.

Ideally, you should be able to commit to two meetings each year, be a good team worker and have a clear vision of where you think RCSEd and ENT should be going in the next few years.

Members are appointed to serve three-year terms which, in some circumstances, may be extended for a further 12-month period.

Closing date for applications is Friday 2 November 2012.

For application details, contact: Alice Brown, SSG Secretariat, 0131 527 1642

Heritage Lottery Fund support for RCSEd’s Playfair Museum
27 August 2012

The College’s £2.6 million Stage 1 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been successful. The bid submission is to help fund a new lift access to the Playfair Museum and reorganisation of the internal Museum layout. Total cost is £4.2 million.

While a Stage 1 pass does not mean automatic acceptance of the proposals at Stage 2, it is a very strong indication of the HLF’s likely acceptance of the scheme. A £167,000 development grant from the Lottery will contribute toward fully costed proposals for the programme. It is expected to submit these to the Heritage Lottery in mid-2013, which would allow work to commence early in 2014.

RCSEd’s Director of Development and Appeals, Stuart Armstrong said: “Because of the size of our bid, the application went to the HLF National Board in competition with other bids from around the UK.
It is particularly satisfying to know that
the quality of the Playfair Museum bid stood out against a very competitive national entry.”
