The RCSEd has launched the International School of Surgery to provide greater support for its global membership
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has a long history of pursuing excellence and advancement in surgical practice across the world.
Our aim has been to provide a comprehensive package of support across our global network, through assessment by our suite of examinations, the provision of educational resources and courses, and by providing worldwide access to events, news and developments in surgery.
But of course there is always more we can do. With this background in mind we are pleased to announce the launch of the College’s International School of Surgery.
This initiative will ensure that our education and assessment resources are matched to the needs of our partner organisations and our existing and potential membership worldwide by drawing together and co-ordinating the work of our education and examinations departments. The International School of Surgery will ensure that we maintain a focused and co-ordinated approach to these crucial areas of our professional activity.
Currently, the College operates a range of valued initiatives that support the international surgical community. Amongst these, is the International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme (IMGSS) which has been in place for over 20 years and facilitates UK training for international doctors; we have a growing network of International Surgical Advisers (ISAs) who promote the activities of the College and provide vital local channels of communication between the main body of the College and our international Fellows and Members.
The College is perhaps best known for the comprehensive suite of examinations which it delivers outside the UK in collaboration with our international partners, working either alone or alongside our sister Colleges in the UK and Ireland to provide an independent benchmark of academic achievement. In addition, the College offers an expanding portfolio of courses, programmes and resources providing face-to-face and online support for surgeons in training and their professional development.
The International School of Surgery will draw together and enhance our existing initiatives, as well as providing a forum to identify additional opportunities to strengthen our pursuit of excellence and advancement of surgical practice worldwide.
The school will provide a contact point for international Fellows and Members for enquiries about our international activity and will provide opportunity for continuing professional development beyond our benchmark examinations. Our network of ISAs will, in turn, help us to connect with our international Fellows and Members and ensure that we maintain a strong awareness of news and developments in their area allowing us to respond swiftly to their needs.
Commenting on the launch of the ISS, RCSEd Vice President and Head of the School, Mr Mike Lavelle-Jones said: “The International School of Surgery represents a landmark in the development of the College’s international strategy, enhancing our ability to support our partner organisations and Fellows and Members worldwide.”
RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie said: “This exciting new development by the College recognises the importance of our international fellowship and represents an enhancement in our commitment to supporting our Fellows where they work. We look forward to continuing dialogue with surgeons across the world.”
Mr Mike Lavelle-Jones, RCSEd Vice President for External Affairs, will oversee the strategy and operations of the ISS, supported by our ISS Manager, Catriona Gorry. l
