Over 45 people gathered at Salisbury on 14 May for the Wessex BDA Hospitals Group meeting
Part of the day was devoted to presentations from trainees and Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) of research, audit and case reports. The RCSEd sponsored prizes in three categories: Best Dental Foundation Trainee Presentation, Best Specialist Trainee presentation and Best DCP Presentation.
The winner of the Dental Foundation Trainee Prize was Vicky Brown, a Community Dental DF2 in Hampshire. Her audit of consent prior to general anaesthesia at the Poswilo Centre showed that a number of treatment plans needed to be changed at the time of surgery, there were a few documentation errors and that correct imaging was not always taken pre-operatively. In Vicky’s presentation she outlined an action plan for change and highlighted the key requirements of consenting patients for general anaesthesia.
The winner of the Specialist Trainee Prize was Suzanne Lello, StR in Oral Surgery at Swindon. Suzanne looked at the type and cause of facial injuries to children in the Swindon area. She highlighted a higher incidence of facial trauma in the areas of greater social deprivation. She identified the need to accurately record the cause of facial trauma in children so that accident prevention campaigns can be targeted both locally and nationally.
The DCP prize went to Mark Richards, Maxillofacial Technician at Salisbury District Hospital. Mark outlined the multidisciplinary team approach for ongoing secondary rehabilitation of a serviceman who had sustained a gunshot wound to the face. The reconstruction of this patient was facilitated by the use of a steroelithographic analogue model, which allowed the fabrication of templates as a guide for a vascularised free fibula bone graft of the mandible and for two antelateral thigh flaps for tissue covering and lining. n
