This is the first dedicated revision guide for candidates due to sit the FRCS(Urol) Viva examination. Written and edited by senior urology trainees and consultants, it is based on the format of the examination and covers topics from prostate and bladder cancer, through to paediatric urology to andrology.
Of its 15 chapters, 14 are based on topic areas whilst the last chapter offers a list of FAQs in different subject areas. There is a good mixture of theoretical knowledge and clinical scenarios from the Viva examination and the text is focused and concise, enabling the reader to dip in and out to those areas that are relevant to them. There are excellent model answers which will serve as a good backbone for further reading and a concise list of key references are available at the end of each chapter.
One criticism is that it does not cover all topics – for example the chapter on urinary tract infections does not cover xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis. However, it is hard for a revision aide to cover everything without becoming a weighty tome like Campbell’s Urology.
This is an excellent revision aide for the candidates who are about to sit the FRCS (Urol) Viva examination, but will also be useful to those sitting the MSc (Urology) and the FEBU examinations.
