One hundred years after his death, RCSEd prepares to celebrate the life and contribution of Lord Joseph Lister
It has been an exciting time developing plans and leading a team of enthusiastic College staff, Council members and contributors from specialty associations to create a series of events to mark the 100th Anniversary of the death of Lord Lister. He made a significant impact to the practice of surgery and the Lister Centenary Celebrations will mark the most important programme to be held by the College since its 500th Anniversary event in 2005.
The events will be centred around a two-day scientific meeting, on Thursday 9 and Friday 10 February 2012, which will include eponymous lectures, keynote lectures, symposia and short-paper sessions. In addition, there will be an opportunity for submission of abstracts for short-paper and poster presentation. Lister developed his theories on antiseptic surgery during his work in Scotland and many of the challenges of sepsis and infection remain as relevant today as at the time of Lister’s discoveries. The general theme of the meeting will focus on these issues.
The Surgeons’ Hall Museum will also host an exhibition, bringing together artefacts from the College, Edinburgh University, the Royal College of Physicians and from our corporate sponsors for this event, Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies. Using original artefacts, images and documents, this exhibition will explore the themes of microbiology, microscopy, Lister’s experiments and his legacy. The life and times of Joseph Lister will be depicted by character actors who will conduct historical walking tours throughout the city of Edinburgh.
Following the Scientific Meeting, the grand final of the Surgical Skills Competition (mentioned below) will take place. There has already been significant interest in this competition, with exciting prizes for the winning students.
The programme will also include dinners, social events and a public lecture. For those interested in finding out more about our celebrations, or in submitting abstracts or registering for the meeting, visit www.lister2012.com. The College looks forward to welcoming you to an event which we trust will be of unique scientific, historical and educational interest.

Lister Surgical Skills Competition
The College has launched the Lister Surgical Skills Competition, in association with Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies, which will see senior medical students throughout the UK competing in one of 19 deanery-based regional heats held from September to December 2011. The students judged to have the best surgical skills will then compete in the grand final in Edinburgh on Saturday 11 February 2012 as part of the Lister Centenary Celebrations.
In addition to being a great activity to note on a medical student’s CV, there are terrific prizes on offer. Regional winners will receive a travel and accommodation package to compete in the Grand Final in Edinburgh in February 2012, while the grand final winner can look forward to a visit to Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies’ Surgical Training Institute in Hamburg!
The RSM is sponsoring runners-up prizes both for the regional heats and the grand final. Regional runners-up will receive a year’s free RSM student membership, and the grand final runner up will receive free RSM student membership until they qualify as a doctor, in addition to a £50 voucher for the RSM restaurant.
